Philosophy of Care

What you will find at the Baby Place...

The Comfort of Home: Our birth center was created with both function and aesthetics in mind. We know it means a lot to you to come into a safe, serene space where attention to detail was considered for your comfort.

The Gift of Time: The prenatal visit is the time for exploring issues around pregnancy, birth and becoming parents. Because we allow 30 to 60 minutes for your appointment, we have time to truly hear you and answer your questions.

The Empowerment of Information: We are committed to providing you with the necessary information about your body and your baby and all that is involved in a healthy pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Education is the cornerstone to midwifery and we will review all the information so that you can make informed choices through the process. In addition, we will connect you with childbirth educators, doulas and other providers to prepare you in this time.

The Celebration of YOU: We know how special this time is for you and how hard it can be in this day and age to slow down and enjoy the miracle of pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent. We are intentional about focusing on you and your baby while you are with us. When you are at the Baby Place, you will receive sensitive, respectful care as we spend time with you learning about your desires and concerns as well as your joy and celebrations.

The Value of Family: Because we value family, we have created an environment that encourages family participation and support. We use your prenatal visits to promote family bonding and begin the process of preparing you for the transition to parenting a newborn and welcoming this addition to the family.

The Safety of Observation and Monitoring: Through regular appointments, we carefully monitor your baby’s development, and your changing body. During labor and birth, we observe and monitor you unobtrusively.

The Continuity of Care: Through prenatal appointments we will develop a relationship with you and you can be sure it is we who will attend you through the duration of your birth and provide you with postpartum care and support.

The Option of Privacy: This is your birth. A completely personal event, we recognize that intimacy and privacy helps some women feel safest to move through labor more comfortably. You may choose to labor with the support of very few people or just the monitoring of your midwife. Or, you may see your birth as a family experience and any family, friends, or support professionals you want to be with you are welcomed. We easily incorporate family into the process. In addition to the private suite, there are kitchenette facilities and a family room for your guests as well as the Baby Place property with views of the mountains.

The Right of Freedom: Birth is not an illness. Unnecessary restrictions serve no purpose and only inhibit an otherwise normal process that is quite individual. At the Baby Place, we encourage you to eat, drink, and move around during labor as you wish. You are given the option to choose to birth in any position that feels right to you on a birth stool, in a full or supported squat, on her hands and knees, semi-reclining on the queen-sized bed, or in a birthing tub.

The Importance of Trust: With great trust in and respect for the healthy process of pregnancy and birth, we consistently affirm that your body was made to do this. We know what you are capable of and we acknowledge the innate wisdom of your body and your baby.

The Satisfaction of Support: We provide you with a sensitive, safe environment; offer the support of a doula and make available many natural comfort measures and techniques to allow you to cope effectively with labor and birth.

The Respect of Bonding: We believe the separation of mother and baby after delivery is unnecessary and disruptive. At no time will your baby be separated from you while at the birthing center. All necessary care, exams, and tests are done while your little one is in your arms or safe beside you in the bed. We will support you to begin breastfeeding immediately. Your privacy and bonding time alone together is respected and supported.

The Need to Mother the Mother: The length of your stay in the birth center after birth varies from family to family. The average recovery time is 6-8 hours, but could be as much as 24 hours depending upon the immediate needs of mother and baby. Before leaving the birth center we will teach you what to expect in the coming days and weeks and how to monitor their baby's health. Unlike typical postpartum heath care schedules, we will see you within the first 24–48 hours and a clinic visit occurs with mom and baby at 2 weeks to ensure a healthy start together as mother and child. As with all your care, this schedule is flexible and may be adjusted according to your individual family's needs.

The Recognition of the 4th Trimester: We know that some of the greatest challenges come in the “4th Trimester”- the postpartum weeks and months when you are home with baby. A 6-week postpartum visit is scheduled to make sure the process of transition is normal and that you have the support you need.

The Necessity of Community: The Baby Place Birth Center is committed to serving you as a community resource to help you connect with other new mothers and families. We facilitate classes such as baby-wearing and diapering and new moms group. The relationship we build with our families during pregnancy and birth is important to us. To stay connected we communicate through e-newsletters and schedule annual events to celebrate together.
