The Midwives
“What kind of Midwives are you?”
We love this question.
Midwives come in many forms but some like to define or attempt to categorize us by our method of training, experience or professional affiliations. The truth is a midwife’s “training” is only one aspect of who she is as a practitioner. Midwives, like people, are a mix of knowledge, experience, beliefs and practice styles. We need all kinds of midwives because we have all kinds of people.
Your midwife should be someone you trust, who answers all your questions and who has the skills to handle everything that might come up. She should be someone you are very comfortable with, who guides you appropriately through your healthy pregnancy and birth, monitors both mother and baby, refers to other specialists when necessary, and uses many ways to instill confidence in you through your pregnancy, during your birth and as a new mother.
At the Baby Place, we are those “kind of midwives”. We welcome all your questions even the hard ones, and believe this process is a wonderful way to open the door to the level of communication and trust that should exist between families and their midwives.
Yes, we are Licensed Midwives and we are Certified Professional Midwives and no, it is not the initials after our names that gave any of our midwives the experience we bring to your care or that has distinguished The Baby Place as the largest birth center in the state, serving the most Idaho families each year with exemplary statistics and outcomes.
In the end, you must decide what “kind of midwife” is best for you.
We believe that the answer might be found in asking yourself a different question:
What Kind of Care are looking for?
Are you looking for a midwife who will :
~ Work in partnership with you to help protect the normal process of pregnancy and birth
~ Communicate honestly and directly with you so that your partnership is strong during this journey
~ Draw from vast practical experience (far more than the requirement for licensure and/or certification) and a wide range of resources to provide care unique to your personal needs
~ Value the social, emotional, cultural, psychological, spiritual and physical aspects of your pregnancy and birth
~ Walk along side you on your journey through pregnancy and childbirth seeking to empower you and your family in the process
If you answered yes, we may be the midwives for you. Please call to schedule your free consultation visit.

1“We had a wonderful experience at the Baby Place. We interviewed several midwives in the Treasure Valley before choosing Coleen and we felt her knowledge and experience were just what we were looking for. Previously, I had 4 hospitals births and I can honestly say that I have never had better care during a delivery. Because of the quality of care I received, my recovery has been faster and much more comfortable than before. Coleen is an excellent midwife with a knowledgeable and caring staff.”
