The Midwives

Holly Sikha, Student Midwife

My journey into midwifery began when I first heard the story of my own birth. Hearing my own mother’s account of birthing her children allowed me to appreciate the natural ability and inherent wisdom that women have. My journey continued at eighteen, when upon hearing about a midwifery school starting up in my hometown, I instantly knew that I wanted to become a midwife. At the time I was overseas, and began to make plans to attend upon my return home. While overseas I met my husband and spent the next few years being engaged and settling into my new marriage. Becoming a midwife got put on hold during these life changes.

Three years later, I found myself talking to Dani Kennedy about being a doula. I became very excited about the possibility of being involved in the world of birth. Becoming a doula seemed like a good entry point, so I immediately enrolled in doula training. About 6 months later I became pregnant and knew that I wanted to receive the kind of care that I had been trained to give. Dani became my doula and I gave birth at the Baby Place. The loving, and empowering birth of my daughter Jeya rekindled my desire to become a midwife. I want to provide that beautiful atmosphere for other women, welcoming babies into this world with loving hands, prayer and compassion.

Holly has been attending births since December of 2008 and became a full-time student in June of 2009. She has attended over 200 births.
