The Midwives

Samantha Sturlin, Student Midwife

After the hospital birth of my first daughter, I was left with a feeling that I missed something. I felt that I had been disrespected in my labor and cheated out of the birth experience that I truly desired. When I became pregnant for the second time, I knew that I would not be returning to the hospital, and chose a midwife assisted birth. The differences between my first and second births were remarkable, and left me feeling safe and complete.  I was so blessed by the care that I received from Coleen and Jerusha at The Baby Place that it was easy to return again for each of my next three births.

After experiencing the difference of midwifery care, I had a deep desire to become a midwife myself and in 2006 I began apprenticing, but even though my heart was prepared, I soon learned that I wasn’t quite molded into the person that I was meant to be and I took the much needed time to focus on my family and my own personal growth.

Now, returning to this work I feel so drawn to, I feel that I truly understand and value what it means to be a good midwife. Every day I am honored to work alongside the most amazing women, who teach me daily about sacrifice and commitment.  And I also have the honor of caring for amazing women, many of whom are starting their own journey into motherhood.  I sincerely feel that, at the end of the day,  I leave with far more than I could ever give.

Samantha has attended over 250 births.
